Who We're Seeking

The Dean of Students (DoS) at Gary Comer College Prep is directly responsible for ensuring that our school has a culture and multi-tiered support systems that lead to the provision of an optimal learning environment for scholars as demonstrated by high promotion rates and scholar retention. This is accomplished by supporting the Assistant Principals of 9/10 and 11/12 in ensuring that scholars at GCCP complete promotional criteria, ideally prior to June and if not by June through summer school. Additionally, it is accomplished by ensuring meaningful scholar experiences through the coordination of community service opportunities, robust enrichment (sports and clubs) options, and targeted interventions. The DoS also executes scheduling, Night School, and Summer School.

Roles and Responsibilities

As DoS you work collaboratively with APs around all promotion criteria except Community Service and Enrichment; for these systems, structures, and results the DoS is the primary owner.  Also, the DoS leads the development of support systems for scholars who are not on track to promote or meet school-wide goals (i.e. F Count, detention count, and attendance). The DoS will have the autonomy to think creatively about how to achieve goals and will be held accountable to results through management by iteration.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating and maintaining a school-wide 9th-12th Grade promotion tracker
  • Leading monthly MTSS 9/10 and 11/12 meetings with AP, DoD, DoSE, Social Worker
  • Co-planing bi-weekly MTSS grade level meetings
  • Communicating with and supporting advisors in planning tier one interventions for struggling advisees
  • Sharing school-wide promotion tracker with pre-identified trends and areas of focus at a bi-weekly cadence
  • Working with APs to determine responses to data when analyzing progress-to-goals for grades, discipline, attendance, CS, enrichment, and PE
  • Leading the SST in developing interventions that support scholars with more than 2 Fs, on track to earn two discipline classes, and/or on pace to earn 10-20 days of absences
  • Collaborating with APs and GLDs to develop grade level specific interventions that support scholars with 2 or more Fs, on track to earn 20-26 detentions, and/or not on pace to attend school at least 88% of the year
  • Collaborating with APs and advisors to develop advisor-specific interventions that support advisees who have 1 F and are on track to earning a discipline class
  • Creating processes to own community service from beginning to end
  • Creating processes to own enrichment from beginning to end
  • Creating processes to own the execution of night/summer school from beginning to end.
  • Creating processes to own the execution of RCPU from beginning to end.
  • Ensuring up-to-date accurate transcripts
  • Working with APs 9/10 and 11/12 to complete all scheduling tasks for the year
