NewSchools was founded by venture capital luminaries John Doerr and Brook Byers and social entrepreneur Kim Smith on the belief that entrepreneurs could bring about positive change in K-12 schools, just as they had done in other sectors. NewSchools operates as a fund – pooling resources from generous individuals and foundations to support the organizational strategy for three or more years at a time. The NewSchools board covers general operating expenses so every dollar donated goes to support promising education ventures. NewSchools is in year two of a three-year fundraising cycle with ~$93mm raised against a goal of $125mm for this cycle. The Director will lead the organization to successfully execute fundraising for the current cycle while also building the strategy for the next fund (2021-2023). While managing two direct reports, your key responsibilities include:
Overall strategy and donor cultivation
Set the overall organizational development strategy in conjunction with the leadership team and board
Ensure that the case for support expresses NewSchools’ unique value proposition and takes into account donor interests and trends in the field
Develop and execute high-level tailored campaigns and strategies to reach new donors and donor segments, including leading the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of a portfolio of high net-worth individual donors
Work closely with the CEO and Leadership Team members to raise funds for the three investment areas, including development of customized strategies and management of execution as needed
Support the CEO’s portfolio of donor relationships, providing the structures, insights and recommended strategies so that the CEO is set up to engage with the overall fundraising strategy and individual donors at the optimum level
Board management and reporting
Activate the existing board, working closely with board members to help drive their individual fundraising activities
Lead development of new board structures to increase overall fundraising engagement, and onboard new board members to increase overall fundraising capacity
Report out to the full board on fundraising strategic plans and overall progress to goal on a regular basis
Managing team execution
Manage two full-time staff to progress toward goals, coaching and developing them to maximize their impact and build their skills
Ensure that the full development team: strategically builds all donor portfolios and engagement plans, conducts donor interactions and communications at a high level, and executes individual operational plans in order to meet team goals
Lead assessment of pipeline health, and measurement of progress to current year revenue and multi-year fundraising goals
Provide strategic oversight for donor stewardship events throughout the year
Develop and guide team structure going forward, including leading hiring process for new team members
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to think critically and innovatively to build the vision for and lead the short- and long-term fundraising strategy
Experience managing and leading a team to achieve strong fundraising results, and can work across multiple high-level internal and external stakeholders to be able to drive execution
Ability to create and deliver compelling formal and informal communications about our organization, mission, and goals, and can convey complex ideas through brief, simple materials
Has a mature presence, and can demonstrate experience and credibility when presenting materials to external audiences
Ability to work independently, with a strong ability to build clarity out of ambiguity and stay laser focused on high-level goals and priorities in fast-changing environments
Obsessive about building long-term donor relationships, and can effortlessly interact with people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences
Demonstrated pursuit of diversity, equity, and inclusion; direct experience and content knowledge of DEI practices highly valued
Ability to travel approximately 2-3 times per quarter
Working style suited to a small-office setting with limited support staff, where teamwork and resourcefulness are highly valued
The Director of Development will demonstrate a passionate commitment to the Partnership’s mission and a strong desire to support an effective launch of the organization.
The ideal candidate will have 10-plus years of professional experience, including a fundraising background. However, candidates who have strong strategic thinking, writing and interpersonal skills along with a demonstrated deep commitment to the organization’s mission and goals will be considered.
Additional sought-after experience and qualifications include:
Experience in or strong knowledge of the PreK-12 education sector
Proven success in development, including experience implementing high-level fundraising plan and especially working with high net worth individuals
Evidence of effective management skills and experience.
