The Director of Talent Development will be responsible for developing and implementing systems that support a positive and productive work environment at KIPP DC Headquarters. The Director will focus on systems for onboarding, performance management, development, and retention of HDQ employees. The Director will report to the Chief of Staff.


  • Facilitate onboarding systems to support new team members to KIPP DC.
  • Create onboarding templates for HDQ team members, which include HDQ resources, expectations for new employees, and manager resources for how to successfully onboard new team members.
  • Lead onboarding sessions for new team members.
  • Manage 90-day step-backs for new team members and managers.
  • Ensure performance reviews and performance management systems help team members to grow and develop.
  • Lead annual performance review process, including communication, training, implementation, and tracking of the process.
  • Evaluate current performance reviews and ensure competency maps align to 2025 Strategic Goals, including both Leadership Competency Map and functional competency maps.
  • Support both new and veteran managers in supporting staff through management training, development of tools that align to KIPP DC systems, and other supports.
  • Provide opportunities for KIPP DC team members to develop as leaders.
  • Develop and implement plans for HDQ leadership development.
  • Build capacity around current and future leaders, including shared knowledge of KIPP DC vision and mission, leadership skills, and relationships across HDQ.
  • Develop vision for career pathways at KIPP DC HDQ
  • Keep retention of top talent as a key focus for the organization.
  • Review data from Insight and other sources to create a HDQ value proposition to support retention of HDQ employees.
  • Conduct exit interviews for all KIPP DC HDQ employees and identify trends to share with the executive team
  • Do all of the above with an equity lens, and then in addition, support the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work of the organization.
  • Support KIPP DC’s DEI vison and support the DEI Council’s work in support of that vision.


  • Bachelor’s degree required, masters preferred
  • 5-7 years of work experience in talent development, DEI, or recruiting in education or nonprofit preferred
  • Experience leading adult learning and adult facilitation
  • Knowledge and experience with talent development systems, with an eye toward equity and access for all team members
  • Experience with implementing DEI priorities within an education or nonprofit organization
  • Unquestioned integrity and commitment to KIPP DC’s mission, and a passion for education and a desire to help KIPP DC grow
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong work ethic coupled with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to one's work
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast paced environment and an eagerness to build relationships
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills
  • Excellent strategic planning and prioritization skills
  • Articulate, professional demeanor with strong self-confidence, initiative, and leadership skills
  • Flexibility, tenacity, high quality work, resourcefulness, teamwork, and a sense of humor
  • Ability to travel approximately 10% and attend weekend (1-2 per month) events
