YouthBuild DC Public Charter School (YouthBuild PCS) is an alternative high school for young people seeking to transform their lives by re-engaging in their education in a non-traditional school environment. YouthBuild PCS prepares students for post secondary education and the workplace by offering, in English and Spanish, academic, vocational and workforce development programs. YouthBuild PCS believes that service to the community is an essential part of the transformative process. Therefore, students serve their community through volunteer projects and by creating housing for low-income residents in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

The Transitions Coordinator helps to plan, facilitate, and provide oversight of students’ post-secondary placement. This is a full-time position, with occasional weekend and evening service hours. The Transitions Coordinator reports to the Head of School and manages the Transition Specialist. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Serve as a member of the school’s  Leadership Team, advise on critical program decisions.
  • Support the professional development of, and provide supervision to, the Transitions Specialist.
  • Career and College Readiness
  • Collaborate with the Academic Department to build students’ college and career awareness and readiness; work with students to develop Individual Transition Plans.
  • Set up job site visits and career exploration activities to introduce students to various jobs, careers, and apprenticeship/internship opportunities.
  • Set up campus visits and college exploration activities to introduce youth to post-secondary opportunities, various jobs, careers, and apprenticeship/internship opportunities.
  • Work with Transitions Specialist to recruit and enroll AmeriCorps student members in accordance with applicable CNCS guidelines, grant agreements, etc.
  • Track member progress toward achieving performance measures as outlined in the AmeriCorps grant agreement.


  • Meet organizational goals for placement and retention in the workforce and/or post-secondary education.
  • Track alumni one year after exit to ensure retention in job/career opportunities. Support  alumni with career readiness, securing employment and accessing post-secondary education.
  • Develop partnerships with foundations and other organizations to provide scholarship opportunities to students (e.g., New Futures). 
  • Collaborate with the Head of School, the Construction Manager, and other school leaders to secure student placement in internships, apprenticeships, and other employment opportunities.
  • Follow-up with students on their employment and PSE status via phone, email, and social media.
  • Verify student placement by conducting site visits, phone calls, email communication, and Social Security Number employment inquiries.
  • Help support the development of an Industry Advisory Council.

Data Management

  • Track progress towards career development goals (such as resume and cover letter completion, participation in mock interviews, successful job applications), as well as post-secondary education and employment outcomes via the school’s Student Information System, as well as funder-sponsored databases (e.g., DYB database).


  • Bachelor’s degree required, with at least two years of experience teaching opportunity  youth and demonstrated success assisting youth in obtaining employment and completing post-secondary education.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Fluency in Spanish is preferred. 
  • Database management experience a plus.

  • Commitment to mentoring and educating opportunity youth, and belief that all students can achieve success.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide engaging and developmentally appropriate programming.
  • Commitment to regularly assessing student progress and using data to strengthen student performance
  • Demonstrated ability to engage diverse young adult learners, including those with disabilities and English Language Learners.
  • Familiarity with youth development principles and alternative high schools.
  • Strong cultural competency skills, including excellent ability to communicate with  diverse students and staff.
  • Must be flexible, energetic, and resourceful.
