MISSION: The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will improve outcomes for all public-school students in the state by providing leadership, guidance, and support to school systems. POSITION OVERVIEW: The Director of Media Relations leads the Texas Education Agency’s approach to ensuring we are effectively informing the public and telling the story of the agency and public education in Texas by responding to media inquiries and developing and implementing communications plans for high-priority agency initiatives, as well as working collaboratively to support execution of stakeholder, marketing, and internal communications efforts. The Director of Media Relations drives the development of external communications strategy, serves as lead spokesperson for the agency and oversees work to develop written, digital, and audio/video content to better inform Texans of the work of TEA, the progress the Agency is making against our strategic plan, and the ways we all can support students in achieving academic success. This role will report to the Deputy Commissioner of Operations and will work closely with all agency leadership. He/she will also serve as the primary media advisor to the Commissioner of Education. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Own the development, coordination and execution of TEA’s media engagement strategies, including responses to media inquiries, crisis communications, social media strategy, and key messages, and proactive media engagement to promote agency strategic priorities. Provide advice and counsel to the Commissioner and senior cabinet members to inform the agency’s media engagement, public statements, and talking points. Effectively manage a team of three staff to their highest potential. Coordinate and collaborate effectively on cross-functional efforts with teams across the agency, particularly regarding marketing plans for key agency products, communications to education stakeholders, and internal communications at the agency. Serve as primary point of contact on communications issues with other state agencies as required. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university. Experience: At least seven (7) years of experience in communications, public relations, marketing or related field in increasingly responsible roles and effectively managing a team to success. OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Experience as a spokesperson highly preferred. Experience in crisis communications highly preferred. Experiencing developing and implementing multi-channel media campaigns preferred. Knowledge of news and communication media; of editing and preparing informational material; of copy layout; and of publishing and broadcast industries. Experience in state government communications a plus. Experience using social media networks and creating and distributing original social media content and campaigns. Ability to design communication plans and materials. Understanding of stakeholder communications strategies and approaches and experience communicating complex ideas to a wide range of stakeholders. Understanding of marketing strategies and concepts preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of the education policy landscape in Texas preferred. Believes all children can learn at the highest levels. A desire to self-reflect, give/receive feedback and continuously improve. Ability to engage in a collaborative, results-oriented team environment. Highly organized; ability to manage multiple projects at once and meet deadlines.
