The Site Counselor is responsible for designing and implementing a mental health support program for City Year Baton Rouge. The Site Counselor will provide direct services to AmeriCorps members as well as coordinate group sessions and Professional Development Workshops for both staff and corps. The ideal candidate is a strong and proactive independent worker with an excellent track record and strong organizational, communication and facilitation skills. This is a 10-month contract position with a maximum capacity of 45 hours per month (August-May). This contract position will report to the Executive Director of City Year Baton Rouge. Job Description RESPONSIBILITIES In order to be successful in this role the Site Counselor will: 1. Facilitate individual sessions or interventions with AmeriCorps Members for individual socioemotional support or crisis intervention. 2. Provide mental health services within the NASW code of ethics, the Mental Health Act and the ACS Code of Ethics. a. Assess client needs, risks and strengths with accuracy b. Plan, implement and evaluate effective interventions and service plans by helping clients to identify problems and possible solutions c. Use effective therapeutic communication skills (active listening, open-ended questions, non-judgmental, client-centered, empathy, conflict resolution, and de-escalation) d. Document clinical services in accordance with AmeriCorps guidelines and professional standards e. Create a termination of services plan with client and/or group upon the end of services received f. Assist AmeriCorps members with termination of services with students 3. Develop and implement the communication system to interact and schedule with AmeriCorps members. 4. Design and facilitate group sessions and Professional Development Workshops for both staff and corps as needed. 5. Assist with development of a site trauma plan and self-care plan for AmeriCorps members. 6. Provide suicide risk assessments on AmeriCorps members. 7. Work with the City Year Baton Rouge’s Learning and Development and AmeriCorps Member Experience Managers in developing trainings for corps and staff, including but not limited to trauma, self-care, etc. QUALIFICATIONS • Master’s degree in either Social Work (LMSW) or Counseling (LPC) • Specialization in Mental Health and/or Trauma • Sensitivity to private information and ability to maintain professional boundaries • Experience in working with 17-25-year-olds • Ability to work with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds • Flexibility, resourcefulness, enthusiasm and high energy • Ability to work scheduled evenings • Criminal background check required In order to succeed in this role, the Site Counselor must be able to: • Manage Relationships: Strong interpersonal, mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution skills. • Communicate: Understand the purpose of communication and use appropriate methods of communication for the situation. • Display active listening skills. • Respond to phone and email messages from City Year staff and AmeriCorps members in a timely manner. • Use discretion when sharing information. • Establish a system for information sharing and follow-up.
