City Year Buffalo is seeking the site’s first Development Director who will be responsible for designing and executing the Development strategy that will allow City Year to leverage the resources, talents, and skills of the philanthropic sector to build City Year Buffalo and create change in the community. Reporting to the Executive Director, you will lead the Development team to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors and family foundations. This is a great opportunity to join a small, growing team, help build the organization, and make an impact. City Year was founded as a public-private partnership, and to this day we rely on private and corporate philanthropy, school & district partnerships, as well as AmeriCorps funding to support our mission of helping students stay in school and on track to high school graduation and college and career success. Your specific focus will be on engaging a portfolio of individual donors, managing the annual giving campaign, leading the planning and execution of large-scale fundraising events, and providing staff leadership to the Board. You will be responsible for directly managing and growing a portfolio of donors of prospects in the $5k – 25k range, which will help us raise $75k towards City Year Buffalo’s current yearly budget.
External Relations: Working closely with the Executive Director, you will plan the strategy of donor engagement across sectors: private, government, and education (state policy, etc.). You’ll serve as a representative of City Year in the external community attending events on a frequent basis and build meaningful relationships that result in securing both monetary and in-kind multi-year support for City Year.
Management and Team Leadership: All teams deserve great managers, and in this role you will manage and lead a team of one full time Development Manager and one part time Regional Grant Writer. As resources grow, you’ll have the opportunity to hire, lead, and retain additional development professionals. You’ll create a collaborative, team-based, and inclusive environment where the staff are supported to be engaged members and achieve their individual and organizational goals. You will also represent, respect and role model City Year organizational culture and values on a daily basis as a member of the site Senior Leadership Team. Working collaboratively with other site departments on a frequent basis and with City Year’s national headquarters in Boston will also be vital to this role.
Individual Donor Management: You will maintain a portfolio of donors and prospects in the $5k – 25k range and be directly responsible for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding those donors and prospects to meet annual individual fundraising goals. You will support all Individual Giving efforts, including annual giving, Red Jacket Society major giving program, and fundraising events. You will work closely with Development team to write, edit, and submit all proposals and reports to foundation and individual sources and maintain accurate database records in Salesforce. Board Management and Engagement: You’ll collaborate with the Executive Director to manage the Board throughout the year and during quarterly Board meetings, maintaining engagement both financially and otherwise to ensure Board retention and satisfaction.
Donor Acquisition Strategy: You will work closely with the Development team, prospect researchers, and Site Board to build a prospect portfolio and ensure the flow of prospects into the giving pipeline, from identification through solicitation. You will also develop and manage new creative solicitation campaigns, including #GivingTuesday, to engage new individuals within the Buffalo community.
Events and Stewardship: You will work with the development team to lead and leverage City Year events to increase individual and foundational giving, such as the Annual Gala, Opening Day, MLK Day of Service, champions’ receptions, and other select gatherings. You’ll also represent City Year at corporate and community functions to establish and deepen potential and current donor relationships. With the development team and key volunteers you will develop, execute and evaluate strategies to engage individual donors through outreach, education, invitations to special events, and personal contacts.
Organizational Initiatives: As a member of the City Year Buffalo staff team, you will also participate in site-wide trainings and initiatives, including conducting AmeriCorps member selection interviews and attend site, local and national events and conferences as needed.
