Job Description The special education assistant works in a classroom with special needs students: Helps the students with instruction and classroom activities. Accompanies the students during transition times. Depending on the abilities of the students they are working with, the instructional assistant may be involved in such activities as feeding students, pushing wheelchairs, lifting students, toileting students, changing diapers, cleaning up students after toileting accidents, and washing and drying clothes. The above listing reflects some examples of duties which may be required and is not an all-inclusive list. Teachers and the instructional assistant will work cooperatively in assisting students with self-help skills. Physical demands may require pushing a wheelchair, lifting and moving of students and equipment, bending, squatting, sitting on chairs, or on the floor. Must have a high school diploma/GED.
