Job Description

Assist Head Custodian with supervision, cleaning, and maintenance procedures to ensure high standards of

safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds in preparation/training for Head Custodian

position within the district.

Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities


1. Work under the direct supervision of the head custodian and the general supervision of the principal to assist

with the planning and organization of the campus custodial services program.
2. Assist with the implementation and maintenance of an established custodial cleaning/work schedule that

includes floors, white/chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, restrooms, offices, building grounds, cafeteria, and gymnasium.

3. Assist with the supervision of daily building cleaning and maintenance by directing and monitoring the work of custodians at the campus.

4. Train custodians in proper cleaning procedures and care and maintenance of custodian equipment.

5. Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and complete supply requests as needed.

6. Perform routine custodial tasks as a working supervisor.

7. Set and maintain accuracy of building clocks daily.

8. Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperature and ensure efficient use of fuel, water, and electricity; record HVAC control readings as required.

9. Move furniture and equipment within the building as directed by head custodian/principal.

10. Assist with setting up and taking down facilities/equipment for special events.

11. Assist with lunchroom setup, including arranging tables and chairs.

12. Assist with lawn and ground supervision and maintenance.

13. Assist with oversight for locking, checking and safeguarding facilities.

14. Assist with opening and closing building as directed by head custodian/principal and maintaining security of the building in the absence of school administrator(s)/head custodian.

15. Check daily that exit doors, panic bolts and fire safety equipment are open and working properly during hours of building occupancy.

16. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures
17. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and immediately report to head custodian/principal hazardous

conditions that are not correctable.
18. Attend custodial training and professional learning activities applicable to position and facilitate information

to campus custodians.
19. Assist with the compilation, maintaining and filing of all reports, records, and other required

documents applicable to position.
20. Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected forthis position.

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or regional accrediting agency).

• 1+ year of custodial experience.

• Must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by applicant.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Written and verbal communication skills.

• Demonstrated job knowledge.

• Demonstrated leadership ability.

• Basic computer skills.

• Knowledge of safety measures regarding use of standard cleaning chemicals

• Demonstrated ability to work with frequent interruptions and deadlines; maintain emotional control under stress.

Working ConditionsWork Environment:

• Exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.), and electrical hazards.

• Work: outside, slippery surfaces, uneven surfaces and work alone.

Physical Demands/Requirements:

• Frequent: standing, walking, climbing (stairs, ladder, scaffold, or ramps), stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, hearing, speaking clearly and distinguishing colors.

• Frequent: lifting, carrying and lowering light - under 15 lbs.

• Intermittent: lifting, carrying and lowering moderate - 15-44 lbs.

• Occasional: lifting, carrying and lowering heavy - 45 lbs and over.

• Office equipment and tools: personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line phone, copier, and fax machine.

• Shop equipment and tools: ladder, small hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers, sockets, pliers, crimpers, wire cutters, etc.).

• Custodial equipment: electric and propane buffer, stripper, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, shampooer, mop with manual ringer, and electric scrubbing machine.

• Grounds equipment: riding and power mower, gas powered weed trimmer, blower, garden, and hand tools.

• Communication equipment: radio communication equipment.
