Reading Interventionist (Grades 1-5) & ESL Specialist

Start Date: January 12

The North Andover Public Schools is seeking a highly skilled and passionate Reading Interventionist who is also dual-certified in English as a Second Language (ESL) to serve students in grades 1 through 5. The successful candidate will provide targeted, evidence-based reading intervention to small groups and individual students, while also applying specialized ESL methodologies to support our English learners' language acquisition and literacy development within the context of high-quality curriculum.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Reading Interventionist & ESL Specialist include, but are not limited to, the following:

Instruction and Intervention
  • Design and deliver direct, explicit, and systematic reading instruction to small groups and individual students in grades 1-5, utilizing research-based intervention programs.
  • Teach High Quality Curriculum materials directly, ensuring fidelity to the program's intended scope and sequence, particularly in foundational reading skills (phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension).
  • Scaffold High Quality Curriculum Materials using specialized ESL strategies and techniques to meet the linguistic and academic needs of various learners, including English learners and students with diverse learning profiles.
  • Utilize data from screeners, progress monitoring tools, and state assessments to identify students requiring intervention and to continuously adjust instruction.

Assessment and Data Analysis
  • Administer and interpret a variety of reading and language assessments to determine student proficiency, monitor progress, and measure the effectiveness of intervention services.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of student performance and intervention outcomes.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to analyze student data and participate in data-driven decision-making processes.

Collaboration and Consultation
  • Consult regularly with classroom teachers to co-plan and implement effective strategies for integrating language and literacy support within the general education classroom.
  • Provide professional guidance and resources to staff on best practices in reading instruction, including explicit phonics, and the implementation of effective ESL strategies.
  • Act as a liaison for English learners, collaborating with families and community resources as appropriate.
  • Participate in school-wide and district professional development related to literacy, language acquisition, and curriculum implementation.

Qualifications

Massachusetts Educator Certification
  • Massachusetts Licensure as a Reading Specialist (All Levels) or equivalent certification.
  • Massachusetts Licensure as an ESL/SEI Teacher (PreK-6 or 5-12). Dual certification is mandatory.

Experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of successful experience as a classroom teacher or specialist working with elementary-aged students.
  • Proven experience in delivering evidence-based reading intervention and using data to drive instructional decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing sheltering/scaffolding techniques for English learners.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Deep understanding of the science of reading, including the components of effective literacy instruction and intervention.
  • Strong knowledge of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and WIDA ELD standards.
  • Proficiency in utilizing a variety of instructional technologies to enhance learning.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
