Job Description Job Summary: The registered nurse assures safe, high quality health care for students to optimize health and wellness. Duties are to be performed in accordance with standards of professional school nurse practice, district/ state board of education policies and procedures and Illinois State law regarding nurse practice.
Job Responsibilities:- Assess, interpret and provide health care, in both general and in emergency situations, to students and staff in order to address safety and health concerns.
- Administer medications, perform procedures and treatments in order to support student health and well-being
- Serve as a liaison and collaborate between school and home by communicating with parents/ guardians regarding student health and safety needs.
- Maintain accurate student health records, complete service logs and Medicaid billing and other regulatory reporting requirements.
- Coordinate and supervise vision and hearing screenings and make all referrals and follow up on these referrals.
- Develop and implement individualized care plans for students with health conditions in collaboration with families and medical providers.
- Provide school staff with current information and training about student health concerns and care on a confidential need to know basis.
- Complete state and local mandated reports and maintain accurate student health records and staff reports in order to comply with health and safety laws.
- Assist students and families in accessing health care by sharing appropriate community resources.
- Participate in professional development in order to maintain licensure, grow professionally in the field and meet the requirements of the district.
- Support the training of new school nurses to the district.
- Participate as coordinator for the emergency cardiac response team for the assigned building. (*new requirement in Jan 2025) - check with legal
With ISBE IEP designation:
- Serve as an active, contributing member of the child study team, identifying, evaluating and providing for students receiving special education services.
- Complete and present health histories as part of case study evaluations.
- Complete written health components of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) for students.
- Maintain open communication with the IEP team, including administrators and parents/ guardians, to create a collaborative environment where students' health and safety needs are effectively met.
- Support the development of 504 plans in collaboration with the school psychologist and families for students who require accommodations based on identified health concerns.
Minimum Requirements: - Current unrestricted State of Illinois Registered Nurse license, CPR certification
Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to handle or feel materials. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
