JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Director of Elementary Instruction, the ESL Registrar/Translator will work to increase and improve parent/family involvement by assisting parents and students of non-English language with the schools of Culpeper County, by registering them in school, provide oral and written support for all documents and meetings, and be the liaison between parents, students, and staff.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
  • Serve as a liaison between the school and home;
  • Interpret for special education, division attendance and discipline hearing meetings, between parents/students and teachers/staff;
  • Make personal contact with parents regularly to encourage parental engagement;
  • Maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and parents/families;
  • Enroll students whose families require translation/interpretation services and interpret enrollment documents;
  • Enter newly enrolled ELs into PowerSchool and ELLevation;
  • Serve as the receptionist for the Family Resource Center and Connections;
  • Manage the schedule for The Connections Meeting room;
  • Coordinate the screening of newly enrolled ESL students;
  • Collaborate with school staff to update student LEP status for students transferring from another school division;
  • Maintain the enrollment spreadsheet and share updates with school attendance clerks and the ESL Curriculum Specialist;
  • Translate division documents as requested;
  • Record phone messages in Spanish to be sent to Spanish speaking families as requested; and
  • Performs other assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Education or Human Services field preferred;
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Fluent in reading, speaking, and writing in both Spanish and English.
  • Preferred member of the American Translator Association (ATA).
  • Ability to communicate openly and effectively with students, parents, community patrons, staff, and administration as a positive representative of Culpeper County School system.
  • Ability maintain good working relationships with all employees and the public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Organizational skills for arranging meetings with school staff and parents.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is typically performed in the central office and throughout the division: frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 40 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are required. Travel to schools throughout the division and central office is required. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work environment exposes the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members, administrators, and parents is required. Contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary. Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all CCPS employees. To ensure adequate staffing, positive employee morale, and to meet expected productivity standards throughout the organization, employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule.

EVALUATION:

The supervisor will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
