Literacy Specialist (K-12)

Purpose: The Literacy Specialist is a highly qualified, state certified educator responsible for delivering specific course content. Specialists provide instruction, support and guidance, manage the learning process, and focus on students' individual needs. Specialists monitor student progress through various platforms, approved curriculum and resources, and they actively work closely with teachers, students and parents/Learning Coaches to advance each student's learning toward established goals. Specialists typically work in buildings but must travel occasionally throughout the year to various school functions, for state testing and as may be otherwise required by the school/District.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • State of Ohio Certification as a Teacher.
  • Must be properly certified with a Ohio Reading Endorsement. This position requires both levels of certification.
  • At least five years of teaching experience.

Other Required Qualifications:
  • Pedagogical knowledge of content being taught and ability to apply critical thinking
  • Knowledge of state content standards and ability to align those with the East Cleveland curriculum components.
  • Ability to embrace change/adapt to ensure excellent student outcomes
  • Ability to problem solve independently and have a high level of organization
  • Ability to rapidly learn and adapt to new technologies and teaching platforms

Job Description:
  • An accomplished instructional background in teaching reading to students.
  • Utilizes creative, engaging and universally designed lessons to provide intervention to learners.
  • A strong repertoire of knowledge relative to vocabulary and comprehension strategies.
  • Highly informed of the differentiation process and its implementation in the classroom.
  • Proficient in the usage of student academic data as a means to drive instruction.
  • Experienced in facilitating professional development opportunities for adult learners.
  • Attends weekly open offices with the compliance specialist to review data for students;
  • Provide reading related prompts and grade students' writing samples;
  • Attends Teacher Based Team meetings;
  • Takes ownership for student's academic progress and attendance, communicating high expectations and showing active interest in student's achievement;
  • Analyzes student data to support evidence of instructional support decisions

2026-2027 School Year Per ECEA Negotiated Contract
189 Days
