Job Description

Job Description

St. Johnsbury Academy seeks a dynamic teacher to join their Science department. Founded in 1842, St.
Johnsbury Academy is an independent, coeducational, boarding and day school for grades 9-12 and
postgraduate year. Teaching assignments are likely to include more than one discipline, such as biology
and chemistry or chemistry and physics. An additional course assignment of AP Physics is possible for
the qualified candidate but is not required for this position. Success in this position requires the ability
to engage and support the spectrum of learners from reluctant to enthusiastic. Candidates with the
interest and ability to help coach afterschool science competition teams are especially encouraged to
apply. The successful candidate will join a collaborative and energetic department where teachers
frequently share resources, ideas, and feedback. The department is supported by a full-time laboratory
manager.
We provide a diverse, comprehensive, and independent educational community grounded by our
traditions, our deep optimism regarding young people, and our commitment to academic excellence.
Our aim is to teach good character by modeling and fostering compassion, respect, responsibility, and
integrity; to foster a love for learning by challenging individuals to pursue knowledge, creativity, and
intellectual self-reliance; and to encourage each individual to understand his or her relationships, rights,
and responsibilities within a community that is itself part of the larger world.
St. Johnsbury Academy combines the opportunities and resources of a large independent school with
the personal attention and support of a small boarding school. The beautiful and safe village campus
provides exceptional facilities. Students from 50 Vermont and New Hampshire communities, 25
countries, and as many U.S. states form a diverse and supportive community. The 220 courses (four
levels) include Advanced Placement (30), fine and performing arts (40), languages (4), technology,
engineering, and computer science (20). Extracurricular opportunities abound with 40 teams and 50
organized activities.
As a member of the Academy community, the teacher will:
• Commit to working in and fostering an inclusive, diverse, day and international boarding
community,
• Teach three or four sections of Science each semester, dependent on experience.
• Advise 8-12 students,
• Work with our residential life staff and mentor international and domestic boarding students,
• Coach or advise a student club,
• Work collaboratively with colleagues within the department and throughout the school.
The successful candidate will:
• Be committed to the idea of diversity in the classroom and the acknowledgment and acceptance
of our students' diversity of culture, gender, sexuality, as well as their varied national, economic,
and educational backgrounds,
• Be committed to teaching science as an active process of building explanations,
• Be collaborative and open to the idea of team-teaching and/or working regularly with peers,
• Be enthusiastic about the teaching of reading and writing across the disciplines and able to
differentiate instruction to accommodate students at different stages of their scientific writing
development,
• Help students navigate digital and non-digital information and discern credible sources from
those which are not credible,
• Teach critical thinking skills and original idea generation,
• Be creative and encourage creativity and out-of-the-box thinking in our students,
• Be excited to work one-on-one with our students outside of the classroom using technology
when appropriate.
• Qualified candidates will have a bachelor's degree in Science or related field. Candidates new to
teaching are encouraged to apply.
