The Public Schools of Brookline seeks a Grades 9-12 Latin Teacher. We are looking for a dynamic and passionate educator dedicated to developing student proficiency with the Latin language and deepening their understanding of ancient Roman culture. This position offers an exciting opportunity to design and implement engaging and interactive Latin lessons, create and maintain a supportive and inclusive learning environment, contribute to the academic and personal growth of our students, and develop a lifelong appreciation for language learning.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes active participation and collaboration among students.
- Implementing a comprehensive Latin curriculum that aligns with state standards and proficiency guidelines, focusing on the development of reading skills through the use of multi-modal instruction.
- Differentiating instruction to meet the diverse learning needs, interests, and abilities of students, providing scaffolding and support as needed to promote language acquisition and proficiency development.
- Utilizing a variety of instructional strategies, technology tools, and resources to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
- Implementing effective assessment strategies to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues through clear communication and collaboration.
- Actively participating in professional development opportunities, department meetings, and school-wide initiatives to continuously improve teaching practices and contribute to a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.
- Performing other duties as directed by school leadership.
Required Qualifications:Advanced proficiency in Latin
- Advanced proficiency of Latin grammar, vocabulary, culture, and literature
- Knowledge of secondary level learning and the developmental needs of adolescents
- Strong foundation in student-centered pedagogy
- Demonstrated knowledge of effective world language pedagogy, with an emphasis on proficiency
- Ability to differentiate instruction and assess learning using a variety of methods
- Strong classroom management skills
- Commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment
- Strong communication (oral and written), interpersonal, and organizational skills in English
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and establish positive relationships with students, colleagues, and families
- Reflective practitioner with a growth mindset and a willingness to adapt to the evolving needs of students and the school community
- Massachusetts DESE teacher certification in World Language: Latin (5-12)
- Bachelor's degree
- SEI endorsement
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree
- Previous experience teaching high school students
