Job Description

Independence Local Schools is seeking a dedicated Elementary Reading Tutor to support early literacy growth for students in grades K-4. This position plays a critical role in helping students build foundational reading skills. The tutor will work with small groups or one-on-one under the direction of classroom teachers and intervention staff. The tutor will be actively involved in student, colleague, and parent communication and relations. The reading intervention tutor will report directly to the building principal.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide targeted reading intervention services to students individually, co-taught settings, and in small-group settings based on identified academic needs.
  • Deliver evidence-based literacy instruction aligned with Ohio's Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement and district curriculum expectations.
  • Implement structured literacy practices and evidence-based reading interventions to support the development of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, intervention specialists, and administrators to develop and implement student intervention plans.
  • Utilize assessment data to identify student needs, monitor progress, and adjust instruction to improve reading outcomes.
  • Conduct and support literacy assessments, screenings, and progress monitoring measures as assigned.
  • Create and maintain a positive, supportive, and engaging learning environment that promotes student confidence, motivation, and success.
  • Work closely with classroom teachers to reinforce core reading instruction and support student achievement in the general education setting.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress, intervention goals, and strategies to support literacy development at home.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of student attendance, intervention services, assessment results, and progress monitoring data.
  • Assist students with classroom assignments and provide instructional support to reinforce previously taught skills and concepts.
  • Identify students who may require additional intervention or support services and participate in intervention team meetings as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in evidence-based literacy programs and instructional practices, including structured literacy approaches such as Wilson Reading System, Fundations, or similar programs.
  • Collaborate with colleagues through professional learning communities, intervention meetings, and district initiatives focused on improving student achievement.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and comply with all district policies, state regulations, and professional standards.
  • Participate in professional development activities to strengthen literacy instruction and remain current on best practices in reading intervention.
  • Support school operations, educational activities, and other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid Ohio teaching license with certification in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Reading Endorsement, or Intervention Specialist licensure.
  • Previous experience providing reading intervention or literacy support in a school setting.
  • Knowledge of Ohio's Integrated Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (IMTSS) framework.
