The University of North Carolina System Laboratory School initiative was established by the North Carolina General Assembly to provide enhanced educational programming to improve student performance and to plan demonstration sites for the preparation of future teachers and school administrators. Appalachian State University operates the App State Academy at Middle Fork.

The Exceptional Children's (EC) resource teacher will play an integral role in developing a robust academic program for students in the general education classroom or special education classroom setting. They will be focused on improving student outcomes by building capacity to integrate best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment.

The Academy at Middle Fork is moving toward an innovative, team-based teaching model that promotes co-teaching and inclusive practices. The EC resource teacher will be critical in helping to facilitate this collaborative approach.

Appalachian State University Academy at Middle Fork and Academy at Elkin are tuition-free, public lab schools serving grades K-5. Both Academies are partnerships of Appalachian State University and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and Elkin City Schools.
App State will be the only UNC System institution to operate two lab school programs.

The lab schools employees, including a principal, teachers, and support staff, will be hired by App State and will be university employees.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Special Education
Hold or be eligible for a NC teaching license in Special Education - General Curriculum
