Health & Medical Science Teacher

The individual in this position plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students enrolled in Health & Medical Sciences courses. Creates an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and career development of students to ensure success for every student.

The teacher provides students with meaningful classroom, laboratory, and career-focused experiences designed to develop knowledge and skills related to healthcare professions. The teacher connects academic instruction with practical healthcare applications while promoting professionalism, employability skills, patient care, safety, and exploration of postsecondary education and career opportunities within the healthcare industry.

The individual supervises students in a variety of school-related settings; communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, healthcare professionals, and community stakeholders; designs student assessments; monitors and evaluates student outcomes; and analyzes assessment data.

The teacher develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students; maintains appropriate records; follows required procedures and practices; and monitors the appropriate use and care of healthcare instructional equipment, materials, laboratories, and facilities.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions:

• Using research-based instructional strategies, instructs students through lecture, demonstration, simulation, laboratory activities, hands-on learning, appropriate instructional technology, and other materials to supplement instruction.
  
• Designs engaging and rigorous instructional experiences following Virginia Health & Medical Sciences curriculum frameworks, state requirements, and school division expectations.
  
• Provides instruction in healthcare concepts including patient care, medical terminology, safety and infection control, anatomy and physiology, healthcare systems, ethics, professionalism, and employability skills as appropriate to assigned courses.
  
• Provides opportunities for students to explore a variety of healthcare occupations and postsecondary education and training pathways.
  
• Delivers instruction and provides growth-producing feedback to students.
  
• Administers assessments and records results to determine student progress. Shares results with students and parents to determine appropriate next steps in instruction.
  
• Prepares students, when applicable, to earn industry-recognized credentials and certifications associated with Health & Medical Sciences coursework.
  
• Provides students with hands-on experiences using appropriate healthcare equipment, simulations, and laboratory activities.
  
• Establishes and consistently reinforces appropriate healthcare safety, sanitation, infection-control, confidentiality, and professional standards.
  
• Develops partnerships with healthcare providers, colleges, community organizations, and other stakeholders to strengthen career exploration and work-based learning opportunities for students.
  
• Maintains attendance and grade records.
  
• Maintains a positive classroom and laboratory environment through the use of effective classroom management techniques.
  
• Communicates effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress and concerns.
  
• Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, professional development, and teacher training workshops.
  
• Supports and, when applicable, sponsors Career and Technical Student Organizations and other student leadership opportunities related to Health & Medical Sciences.
  
• Assists students in identifying appropriate courses of study and healthcare career pathways.
  
• Complies with school, school board, Virginia Department of Education, and applicable health and safety policies and regulations.
  
• Demonstrates continued professional growth and maintains required professional credentials and certifications.
  
• Completes required records and reports promptly and accurately.
  
• Uses instructional and planning time effectively.
  
• Assumes responsibility for the appropriate care, inventory, and maintenance of instructional materials, medical simulation equipment, technology, and facilities.
  
• Assumes responsibility for maintaining a neat, organized, sanitary, and safe learning environment for students.
  
• Demonstrates current knowledge of the Health & Medical Sciences content being taught.
  
• Uses out-of-class assignments, when appropriate, to support instructional objectives and career readiness.
  
• Collaborates with other Career & Technical Education teachers, counselors, administrators, healthcare professionals, and postsecondary partners to strengthen the Health & Medical Sciences pathway.

Additional Duties:

• Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING

• Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with the appropriate endorsement in Health & Medical Sciences or meet Virginia Department of Education requirements for licensure through an approved Career and Technical Education pathway.
  
• Appropriate education, occupational experience, professional licensure, certification, and/or healthcare credentials must meet current Virginia Department of Education requirements for the assigned Health & Medical Sciences courses.
  
• Relevant professional experience in a healthcare or medical setting is preferred.
  
• Prior experience teaching Health & Medical Sciences, Career and Technical Education, or providing healthcare-related training is preferred.
  
• Experience working with adolescents, mentoring students, or providing clinical or workplace instruction is preferred.
  
• Must possess or be willing to obtain applicable industry credentials required for the courses taught.
  
• Or an equivalent level of education, professional preparation, and experience as permitted by Virginia licensure requirements.

• Knowledge of current healthcare practices, terminology, tools, equipment, safety procedures, and techniques applicable to assigned courses.
  
• Knowledge of healthcare career pathways, postsecondary education opportunities, and industry expectations.
  
• Knowledge of appropriate healthcare safety, sanitation, infection-control, confidentiality, and professional practices.
  
• Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and methodologies of instruction.
  
• General knowledge of academic and Career & Technical Education curriculum for assigned classes.
  
• Demonstrated ability to connect classroom instruction to authentic healthcare applications and career opportunities.
  
• Demonstrated ability to provide safe and effective hands-on, laboratory, and simulation-based instruction.
  
• Demonstrated ability to develop instructional goals, design and deliver instruction, and assess student learning.
  
• Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student learning needs.
  
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, healthcare professionals, and community partners, both orally and in writing.
  
• Demonstrated ability in decision-making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, collaboration, and planning.
  
• Ability to establish and maintain partnerships with healthcare providers, postsecondary institutions, and community organizations.
  
• Ability to model the professionalism, ethics, communication skills, and workplace expectations associated with healthcare careers.
  
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while functioning effectively as part of the school and CTE instructional team.
