Job Description
About the Role
Worcester Cultural Academy is seeking a skilled, curious, and student-centered Grades 6-7 Science & Math Teacher to join our growing middle grades team. This is a core instructional role responsible for teaching both science and math at the 6th and 7th grade level - the ideal candidate brings content strength in at least one of these disciplines and the flexibility and drive to teach both well.
This role is an opportunity to be part of something being built. WCA is adding a grade each year, and our middle grades program is still taking shape. We're looking for a teacher who is excited to help develop curriculum, contribute to team culture, and grow alongside students who are navigating the shift from elementary to middle school. If you're energized by that kind of challenge - and by the chance to do real, hands-on learning through an EL Education model - we want to hear from you.
Who We Are
Worcester Cultural Academy (WCA) is a growing charter public school that opened in August 2023 with a vision of becoming a K-8 community. We launched as a K-4 school and have added a grade every year since - this fall we welcome our first 7th graders. As an EL (Expeditionary Learning) Education school, we believe in hands-on learning that challenges students to grow in three dimensions: mastery of knowledge and skills, character, and high-quality work. We partner with organizations like the EcoTarium, Worcester Art Museum, and Hanover Theater and anchor our curriculum in Learning Expeditions that make learning meaningful and real.
We want to be honest with prospective candidates: this is energizing, demanding work. Our school is still building its middle grades systems and culture, and we ask everyone on our team to show up fully for students and each other. If that excites you, you'll fit right in.
What You'll Do
Instruction
Plan and deliver engaging, rigorous daily instruction in both science and math for Grades 6 and 7
Design lessons and units grounded in Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for both disciplines, with clear connections to real-world application and EL Education's Learning Expedition model
Use a variety of instructional strategies to meet students where they are - including direct instruction, inquiry-based learning, collaborative problem-solving, and project-based approaches
Build lessons that develop both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency in math, and scientific thinking and literacy in science
Differentiate instruction to support English Language Learners, students with IEPs, and students who need additional challenge
Integrate high-quality student work into daily practice - teaching students to draft, critique, and revise toward excellence
Assessment and Data
Use formative and summative assessments regularly to understand student learning and adjust instruction accordingly
Analyze student work and assessment data to identify patterns, inform grouping, and communicate progress clearly
Maintain accurate and organized grade records and documentation in compliance with school expectations
Participate in data review cycles and student support team meetings, contributing classroom data and instructional context
Communicate student progress to families clearly, honestly, and regularly
Collaboration and Team Membership
Collaborate with grade-level and subject-area colleagues to plan curriculum, calibrate expectations, and solve instructional problems together
Partner with the special education team and any intervention staff to coordinate supports for students with IEPs or identified needs
Participate actively in school-wide professional development, crew, and advisory structures
Contribute to the development of WCA's middle grades culture - including norms, routines, and community-building practices
Engage in ongoing curriculum development as WCA's middle grades program continues to grow
Family and Community Engagement
Build authentic, trusting relationships with students and families across the full range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds represented at WCA
Communicate proactively with families about student progress, learning goals, and how to support their child at home
Participate in family conferences, IEP meetings, and school events as needed
Promote and support diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in all interactions with students, families, and colleagues
Other duties as assigned
What You Bring
Massachusetts DESE licensure in Middle School or Secondary Education, Grades 5-8, in Mathematics or Science (or eligibility for licensure); candidates licensed in one subject and willing to pursue the other are encouraged to apply
Strong content knowledge in your primary discipline (math or science) and demonstrated ability or eagerness to teach both at the middle grades level
Experience teaching in a diverse urban school setting, including working with English Language Learners and students with IEPs
Track record of measurable student growth and the ability to speak clearly to your impact on student learning
Familiarity with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Math (including the Standards for Mathematical Practice) and/or the Next Generation Science Standards
Experience with or interest in project-based, inquiry-based, or EL Education instructional models
Strong data literacy - comfortable using assessment results to drive instructional decisions
Excellent communication and collaboration skills; able to build trust with students, families, teachers, and school leadership
Flexibility and a growth mindset - you're willing to teach outside your primary comfort zone and get better at it
Bilingual proficiency strongly preferred - candidates who speak Spanish, Portuguese, or another language represented in our school community are especially encouraged to apply
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred

Welcome to ATX Learning
