Job Title:Library Media Specialist

Terms of Employment: 230 Days

Pay Grade: Teacher

Job Summary:

This position is responsible to provide a broad spectrum of both traditional library services as well as audio, digital, video and other media formats with the goal of enriching and broadening the learning process for students throughout the school division.

Essential Duties

Selects and acquires materials in accordance with established regulations to implement the curriculum and to meet the individual interest, ability and maturity level of students.
Organizes and distributes all media and audio-visual equipment for effective use.
Participates in curriculum planning and program development and implementation, develops a close working relationship among teachers, principals, and other media librarians.
Creates an attractive environment and atmosphere that encourages students and teachers to use the media center.
Stimulates and guides students in all phases of their reading, viewing, and listening, so that they may effectively assimilate information.
Provides instruction in cooperation with the staff for media and resource skills.
Provides media center experiences to help students develop satisfactory personal relationships, social attitudes, and vocational interests.
Conducts with teachers and volunteer personnel (adult and student) in-services and other staff development activities in the use of audio-visual equipment and materials.
Acquaints the staff and students with the media collection and with new materials.
Assists the Principal in ensuring that instructional materials and equipment are used to provide learning experiences compatible with the educational needs of students.
Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials, and instructs teachers and students on use of the system.
Counsels with and gives reading guidance to students who have special reading problems or unusual intellectual interests.
Prepares a yearly budget, takes an annual inventory, and submits reports as required.
Performs such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.

Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications

A valid Virginia license and endorsement as school librarian with knowledge of acquisition, preparation, and utilization of both printed and non-printed media is required. A broad knowledge and experience in teaching, media programs, management, and administration of library media services is also required. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board or Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
