TITLE: Culture and Climate Coordinator - East End Community School

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Portland Public School seeks a dedicated, collaborative Culture and Climate Coordinator to join the team at East End Community School next year.

The School Culture and Climate Coordinator works in partnership with their school leaders and the Director of Elementary Culture and Climate to promote positive school environments for all students, staff, and families. This position requires 10 days of work in the summer.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Facilitate protocols and practices that emphasize prevention and intervention in the creation of safe, inclusive learning environments
• Support the school-wide implementation and use of restorative practices, including the use of community-building circles and restoratives responses to disciplinary situations
• Lead school-based Tier 1 PBIS/culture teams, Advanced Tiers/SST teams, and participate as part of the District PBIS Team
• Facilitate data-based decision-making and data-based problem solving protocols for continuous school climate and culture improvements
• Partner with teams on the development of intervention plans for students
• Lead the implementation and continuous utilization of SEL curriculum, including coaching new staff and ensuring fidelity of instruction
• Coach staff on classroom and school-wide practices that support positive school culture
• Provide training and professional development for staff on topics related to school climate and culture

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Systems-thinker with understanding of multi-tiered systems of support
• Ability to skillfully coach staff and provide feedback for improvement
• An orientation toward data-based decision making, including experience with collecting, analyzing, and using data for problem solving and progress monitoring
• Dedication to Portland's equity mission and the widespread integration of culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices in schools

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree in education, social work, counseling, or related field from an accredited college or university (Master's degree preferred)
• Experience working in a diverse school setting
• Additional combinations of applicable education, training, and experience welcome

CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization (more info)
• Active certification/licensure in education, counseling, or social work

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS:

• Calendar: 193 days (standard school year + 10 days)
• Assignment: Permanent, full time (1.0 FTE)
• Overtime: Not eligible for overtime
• Contract: Part of PEA union (see 2025-2028 CBA here)
• Salary: Based on education and experience, as outlined in CBA
• Benefits: Eligible for benefits as outlined here
• Reports to: School Principal

The Portland Public Schools gives parents an array of program choices. The district as one of the first in the country to offer project-based Expeditionary Learning from kindergarten through 12th grade.

High school students have access to one of the broadest selections of Advanced Placement courses in Maine. Qualified high school students may take up to two college courses with tuition paid by the state. A regional arts and technology high school provides hands-on courses in growth fields such as health care, robotics and "green" construction.

More than 60 languages are spoken by students attending the Portland Public Schools. Multilingual students represent about a quarter of the district's enrollment. The district's diversity prepares all students for their roles as world citizens.
