POSITION PURPOSE: The LEAP Mentor, as part of the Teacher Support Team for Beaufort County's own alternative route to teacher certification program, will develop teacher candidates into certified teachers by providing comprehensive guidance and assistance throughout the program and certification process.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Support beginning teachers in their journey through alternative certification using the South Carolina Mentoring Model.
  • Engage in the Formative Evaluation Process with beginning teachers based on the ADEPT Performance Standards.
  • Meet weekly with each beginning teacher.
  • Complete all required record keeping prior to deadlines.
  • Work collaboratively with beginning teachers and principals.
  • Participate in all required professional development activities.
  • Communicate regularly with the LEAP Team.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES: Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Chief Administrative and Human Resources Services Officer, Superintendent or other district office administrator as designated by the Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree (MA) from a college or university in a teaching/learning/education field.
  • Certification must be in an area that teacher candidates are seeking certification.
  • Completed mentor training in accordance with South Carolina guidelines to become a certified mentor.
  • Has thorough knowledge of the ADEPT Performance Standards and the state's academic standards for each discipline
  • Has a thorough knowledge of researched-based instructional strategies and effective student assessment based on the state's academic standards.
  • A high level of competency in data-driven instructional decisions.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proficient in application of technology
EXPERIENCE:
  • Experience as an effective South Carolina trained mentor
  • Minimum of five (5) successful years teaching in South Carolina at the continuing-contract level.
