Position Summary

The Gifted Coordinator is a dynamic, collaborative, and thoughtful leader who matches an innovative vision for advanced learning with strong systems to ensure each gifted student in Mason City Schools is challenged, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential. Guided by Mason City Schools' Big Rocks of Culture, Inclusive Excellence, and Personalized Learning, the Gifted Coordinator leads the planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the district's gifted identification and service model.

The Gifted Coordinator provides strategic leadership and oversight for the district's gifted education program, including identification, service delivery, Written Education Plans (WEPs), high-quality professional development, and alignment of advanced learning opportunities across grades K12. The Coordinator ensures compliance with all Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) requirements related to gifted education and collaborates closely with Learning Experience Supervisors, building administrators, and instructional staff to ensure high-quality, equitable services for gifted learners.

The Gifted Coordinator is a strategic thinker, continuous learner, and proactive leader who models strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills. In addition, the Coordinator demonstrates an unwavering commitment to ensuring that advanced learning opportunities are not left to chance, but are intentionally designed and implemented as part of each learner's experience in Mason City Schools. The Coordinator maintains a visible and consistent presence across buildings to support implementation, build relationships, and ensure alignment of gifted practices districtwide.

Responsibilities
  • PROVIDES LEADERSHIP, STRATEGIC DIRECTION, and OVERSIGHT in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the district's gifted education program, aligned with the district's vision, mission, and strategic priorities.
  • DESIGNS, IMPLEMENTS, AND CONTINUALLY IMPROVES COHERENT SYSTEMS for gifted identification and services, including universal screening, referral processes, assessment practices, and acceleration pathways, ensuring alignment to the district's approved identification plan.
  • UTILIZES DATA AND SYSTEMS THINKING to evaluate program effectiveness, monitor student access and participation, and drive continuous improvement.
  • PROVIDES INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP AND CLEAR COMMUNICATION TO STAFF, supporting high-quality gifted instruction across classrooms and buildings through coaching, modeling, and supporting the application of best practices in differentiation, acceleration, and advanced learning.
  • COMMUNICATES EFFECTIVELY WITH FAMILIES regarding identification, service options, placement decisions, and student progress, ensuring clarity, transparency, and responsiveness.
  • SUPPORTS CONSISTENT DECISION-MAKING FOR IDENTIFICATION, PLACEMENT, AND SERVICE PATHWAYS, ensuring clarity and alignment across buildings and equitable access to advanced learning opportunities.
  • COORDINATES AND OVERSEES GIFTED ASSESSMENT PROCESSES, including universal screening, new student identification, and referrals to ensure accurate, timely, and consistent administration and communication of results
  • LEADS AND MONITORS THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF WRITTEN EDUCATION PLANS (WEPs), ensuring quality, consistency, and alignment with student needs.
  • DESIGNS, COORDINATES, AND MONITORS HIGH-QUALITY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (HQPD) aligned to state requirements and district priorities, including designing systems for professional learning, ensuring staff access to required learning, and monitoring participation and impact.
  • MAINTAINS A CONSISTENT AND VISIBLE PRESENCE ACROSS BUILDINGS, working alongside educators and administrators to support implementation, problem-solving, and continuous improvement of gifted practices.
  • PARTNERS WITH DISTRICT AND BUILDING LEADERS to design, implement, and refine service models that provide appropriate levels of challenge, acceleration, and enrichment for gifted learners across grades K12.
  • COLLABORATES WITH DISTRICT TEAMS, including learning experience, special education, English learners, data, and prevention and wellness to ensure alignment and integration of gifted services within the broader instructional framework.
  • ENGAGES STAKEHOLDERS, including families, educators, and community partners, to build shared understanding, trust, and support for gifted education programming.
  • MANAGES THE GIFTED PROGRAM BUDGET, including the procurement of assessment tools, instructional resources, and materials, ensuring alignment with program priorities, compliance requirements, and responsible stewardship of district funds.
  • COORDINATES AND MONITORS EMIS REPORTING related to gifted identification and services, working in partnership with district EMIS personnel to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • ENSURES COMPLIANCE with all state laws, rules, and regulations related to gifted education, including ODEW operating standards, and serves as the district's primary point of contact for gifted monitoring and reporting.
  • ENGAGES IN ONGOING LEARNING AND REFLECTION, staying current with research, trends, and best practices in gifted education and advanced learning.
  • PERFORMS OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.

Ideal Qualifications
  • Gifted Intervention Specialist license or endorsement required
  • Administrative license preferred, but not required
  • Minimum of five years of successful educational experience, including experience working with gifted learners
  • Strong knowledge of local, state, and national trends, research, and best practices in supporting gifted learners
  • Strong knowledge of Ohio's gifted identification processes, service models, and compliance requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and continuously improve systems and programs at the district or organizational level
  • Strong background in differentiated instruction, acceleration, and advanced learning practices
  • Experience leading adult learning, coaching, and professional development across a K12 system, with evidence of impact on instructional practice
  • Ability to use data and systems thinking to inform decision-making, monitor program effectiveness, and improve student outcomes
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively across roles and departments
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate complex information to diverse audiences (staff, families, and stakeholders)
  • Outstanding organizational and facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and ensuring access to advanced learning opportunities for all students

Reports to: Learning Experience Supervisors
FLSA Status: Exempt

Terms of Employment

205 days. Salary and work year to be established by the Superintendent.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
