Summary: Performs a variety of media center support functions for students and staff. Duties include maintaining media center collections, assisting students and staff members in locating resources and materials in support of the classroom, and performing a variety of support duties related to collection, processing, circulation, maintenance, and inventory of media center materials.

Essential Duties: (These duties represent a sample and may vary by position.)
  • Maintains the media center's automation system and assists students and teachers with cirucluaton of resources.
  • Processes new books and other materials entering data into the computer and attaching slips, labels and covers.
  • Assists students and teachers in the use of media center materials, including the technology.
  • Prepares orders, reports, notices, letters, etc. as requested.
  • Receives periodicals and prepares them for circulation.
  • Sorts, retrieves, and re-shelves media materials and equipment; ensures materials are kept in an orderly manner; searches for missing books.
  • Cares for media center materials; including shelving materials, repairing damaged materials, maintaining bar codes, etc.
  • Provides basic instruction and guidance to students using educational computer hardware and software.
  • Assists in the inventory of media center materials.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Minimum

Desirable

  • Associate's Degree or two years of higher education equivalent to 48 credit hours, or ability to pass a formal assessment (Workkey and 96 hours of in-service training), or completion of the NC DOL Apprenticeship Program, or completion of the NC ATA Professional Development Plan

  • Associate's Degree with a concentration in Education

Licensing / Certification Requirements:

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, vocabulary and spelling.
  • Knowledge of alphabetical, numerical and, media center filing systems.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills and organizational skills.

• Ability to perform clerical functions and record maintenance of the media center with minimum supervision.

• Knowledge of computer applications for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, online resources, etc.

• Willingness to remain flexible in supporting staff and program needs and keep abreast of changing technologies.

• Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, administrators and volunteers.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed in the media center environment with pleasant working conditions. The job requires the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing. The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations. The work at times requires bending, squatting, sitting on the floor, reaching, with the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light weights up to 25 pounds. There is good lighting and ventilation, it is reasonably quiet, and the work hours are reasonably regular.
