Director of Compliance

The Director of Compliance will be responsible for supporting school leaders as well as other instructional, operational and clinical personnel throughout CPS to ensure best practices are employed with respect to Special Education, student conduct and employee relations matters, with the goal of establishing systems and practices that prevent non-compliance with all legal policy and ethical obligations.

The Director of Compliance will be responsible for monitoring of district practices and policies to ensure consistency with statutory, regulatory and policy requirements. The Director of Compliance will be responsible for advising the superintendent and district administrators, and supporting the district's legal counsel, to ensure full fidelity to ethical and legal obligations and to develop best practices to ensure effective and systemic commitments to organizational effectiveness and equity.

The Director of Compliance will have in-depth knowledge in order to provide support to building and district administrators in the areas of the law governed by 603 CMR 53.00, M.G.L. c. 71, § 37H¾, M.G.L. c. 71, § 37H-½; 603 CMR 35.00: M.G.L. c.69, §1B; c.71, §38; and M.G.L. c. 71, § 37H and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and associated state and local requirements.

The Director of Compliance will support and advise in matters including but not limited to:

  • Student discipline situations by advising school leaders and building capacity in school-based teams for legally sound and trauma-informed student conduct systems that are grounded in restorative strategies focused on child well-being.
  • Special Education and matters with a commitment toward ensuring continuous access to high-quality educational services in the least restrictive environments for all students.
  • Employee relations matters requiring internal investigations and the consideration of sensitive and/or confidential information, including those conducted pursuant to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and associated state and local requirements.
  • Facilitation of student and employee interactive processes related to requested school or work-place accommodations.
  • Serve as the District's Civil Rights Coordinator, ensuring compliance with all applicable federal and state civil rights laws, including but not limited to Title IX, Title VI, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and related regulations; oversee and coordinate investigations of complaints, monitor district practices, and lead training and prevention efforts to ensure a safe, inclusive, and nondiscriminatory environment for all students and staff.

Additional and related responsibilities will include:

  • To facilitate and support in the presentation of training and professional learning activities related to all of the above referenced areas of responsibility.
  • Support district and building administrators in questions pertaining to the educator evaluation system.
  • Serve in an ombudsperson capacity to review and analyze concerns raised by district personnel, students and/or caregivers requiring consideration as to the impact of existing systems or practices on the delivery of educational services to students or the establishment of an equitable workplace for staff.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree Required; MA or J.D. degree preferred.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of investigatory, district administration or legal counsel in a school district setting with demonstrated expertise in laws and regulations impacting preK-12 school districts.

Compensation: $140,000 to $165,000

Terms of Employment: This is a full-time, 12-month exempt position. Evening and weekend work required to fulfill the responsibilities of the role. As an exempt employee, this position is not eligible for overtime compensation under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
