The Akron Board of Education announces an opening for a Summer Temporary Custodial Worker in the Facilities Services Department, Job Code 289, $16.09 hrly, - as and when needed. Collective Bargaining Unit-none. This is a School Employees Retirement System position. This is not a Civil Service classified position.

Description: This position performs routine summer cleaning of Akron Public School buildings to prepare them for the coming school year.

Dates: June 2026 - August 2026, AS NEEDED.
Mandatory training: To be announced.
Normal Shift: 7am 3 pm (up to 40 hours per week) June August, AS NEEDED

Note: Below lists not ranked in order of importance.
Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited High School or GED
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must pay for and satisfactorily complete a Bureau of Criminal Investigation and FBI background checks
  • Previous experience in housekeeping, custodial, and/or grounds maintenance preferred.

Must be able to:
  • Lift and move furniture.
  • Lift a maximum of 90 pounds.
  • Climb ladders (6, 8 and 12 foot ladders).
  • Walk in excess of 2-3 miles a day.
  • Sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, push, pull, lift, carry, stretch with arms and hands, crouch, climb, balance, kneel and stoop for long periods, up to 8 hours per day.
  • Operate (with training, when needed) automatic floor machines, floor scrubbers, wet/dry vacuums, carpet scrubbers, power washers, mops, brooms, and lawn equipment and landscaping equipment.
  • Change filters, clean windows and door glass, mop, scrub, and wax floors.
  • Clean furniture and walls.
  • Frequent exposure to loud noise, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Trim bushes and trees, mow school lawns, and maintain school grounds, keeping them free from litter.
  • Follow written and oral instruction/direction.
  • Interact in a positive manner with supervisors, fellow employees, staff, students, and public.
  • Work independently.
  • Attend job orientation prior to first day of work.
  • Remain at the job site for the entire shift.
  • Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, and interactions with others.
  • Employees who do not meet the expectations of the Office of Custodial Services will immediately be removed from the schedule.

Employees report to the Head Custodian or Assistant Custodian at the building where they are assigned.

Employees must check in with the Day Supervisor of Custodial Services weekly on Friday by 1:00 pm for their assignment for the following week.
