General Definition of Work

The Electrician II, under moderate supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion performing a variety of specialized and technical duties in the installation, repair, replacement and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems. Employee performs district-level work to carry-out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Supervisor, Maintenance Operations II.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions
  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Maintain electrical safety for all students and personnel
  • Perform a variety of skilled electrical tasks involved in troubleshooting, identifying and repairing malfunctions
  • Install, maintain, replace and repair defective electrical parts in motors, generators, pumps, telemetry equipment, electrical panels, controllers, switches, receptacles, and other facilities equipment
  • Install and maintain electrical systems
  • Install electrical conduit and networking raceways
  • Perform tests and maintain records for emergency back-up systems
  • Maintain inventory and acquire parts as needed to perform electrical repairs
  • Identify problems and assist in the repairs of related HVAC and plumbing equipment
  • Attend professional development and other meetings as required
  • Safely operate a district fleet vehicle to travel to assigned job sites, ensuring compliance with all traffic laws and company driving policies
  • Maintain the vehicle in clean, orderly, and serviceable condition, promptly reporting any maintenance needs, damage, or safety concerns
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of electrical safety and the National Electrical Code and 70E (Safety)
  • Knowledge of full range components, parts, methods, tools, and equipment used in the electrical trade
  • Knowledge components and parts used in electrical distribution, LED lighting, H.I.D. lighting, and basic electrical controls
  • Knowledge of procedures for installing and maintaining electrical systems and ability to train others
  • Skilled in troubleshooting, mechanical proficiency, and record keeping abilities
  • Ability to diagnose problems using various techniques
  • Ability to maintain required records
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints for construction at 90 - 100% DD for architects and engineers
  • Ability to identify, report problems and assist in the repairs of related HVAC and plumbing equipment
  • Ability to work in extreme weather/temperatures, emergency and hazardous situations Ability to demonstrate safe work practices
  • Ability to reflect appropriate response to situations, while maintaining a professional and personal demeanor
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily operations
  • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
  • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of two (2) years of increasingly responsible electrical experience required
  • One of the following licenses required
    • NC School Maintenance Electrician
    • NC Electrical Journeyman
    • NC Limited
    • NC Intermediate
    • NC Unlimited

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Special Requirements
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and ability to provide own transportation to/from work
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
