POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Transportation Director has the responsibility to direct and plan the transportation operations in support of the education programs for Mason City School District.

REPORTING
Reports to Chief Operations Officer FLSA Status: Exempt

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conforms to all state laws and regulations regarding school transportation.
  • Maintains safety standards in conformance with state and insurance regulations and develops a program of preventive safety.
  • Stays abreast of industry standards and rule/law changes.
  • Submits information required for state reports.
  • Completes and dispatches insurance claims information to district preferred insurance agencies.
  • Acts as liaison with parents for complaints and special requests.
  • Collaborates with drivers and building administrators to resolve discipline problems occurring on school buses.
  • Will be on call after hours in the event of an emergency in the transportation area, including weekends for field trip issues.
  • Shall perform all other duties assigned by the COO/Superintendent.

Safety Planning Transportation
  • Works with Mason Police Department and Chief Operations Officer to develop a transportation safety plan in accordance with the district's emergency operations plan.
  • Assists Chief Operations Officer with emergency operation plan for the entire district.
  • Provides/facilitates professional development for all Mason transportation employees.
  • Provides Learner Centered Systems of Support (LCSS), culture training and Big Rocks to transportation employees to support the needs of all students.
  • Coordinates with principals the student training and bus evacuation.
  • Identifies innovative technology solutions that increase safety for all students and staff.

Bus Routing
  • Develops and administers a transportation program to meet all the requirements of the daily instructional program and extracurricular activities including but not limited to bus routes/schedules for Mason students, students with special needs, students attending eligible private school, athletic events, band events, field trips, etc...
  • Coordinates with school principals and others responsible for planning special school trips.
  • Oversees the coordination and assignment of extra trips to drivers.
  • Implement the current bus routing system (Transfinder).

Staffing for Transportation
  • Recruits, trains and supervises all transportation personnel and makes recommendations on their employment, transfer, promotion and release.
  • Develops and implements a staff development plan that includes an orientation process.
  • Maintain a surplus bank of 10 sub drivers.

Transportation Maintenance
  • Maintains district-owned equipment and develops plans for preventive maintenance.
  • Meets regularly with bus mechanics to plan work schedules, make repair decisions and purchasing decisions.
  • Utilize current technology management system (FMX) to complete the following:
  • Safety requirements and system checks on busses
  • Inventory of parts and supplies
  • Bus purchasing - 10 year plan
  • Maintain a list of approved vendors/contractors
Evaluations of Transportation Staff
  • Completes evaluations for all transportation employees.
  • Creates professional development plans for transportation employees.
  • Reviews the current transportation employee evaluation process for the following elements: self-monitoring, personal goal setting, and growth plan.

Develop Positive Transportation Culture
  • Trains the staff in R-Factor (E + R = O).
  • Trains the staff on the 3 Big Rocks: Culture, Inclusive Excellence & Personalized Learning.
  • Promotes recognition of staff (#MasonMoments).
  • Implements an electronic referral system to help discover patterns of concern and address safety issues.
  • Develops a variety of leadership teams to address defined needs of the transportation department.
  • Defines and communicates the future vision of Mason City School District transportation department.
  • Delivers excellence service to all customers.

Transportation Inclement Weather Protocol
  • Assist chief operations officer on road hazards for decision on school closing during inclement weather.
  • Serve as an essential member of the severe weather team, determining plans for the district.
  • Responsible for snow removal and treatment in the bus lot and staff lot, which includes the plowing and shoveling of snow themselves. Making sure all buses are cleaned off as well as the area around the buses are cleared, treated and safe.
Leadership Teams in Transportation
  • Develops and facilitates leadership teams throughout the transportation organization to fully develop handbook and every day procedures.
    • Route planning
    • Driver hiring
    • Bus maintenance (parts/process for reporting)

Transportation Budget
  • Develops and submits transportation budget to chief operations officer.
  • Develops and submits transportation facilities plan to chief operations officer.
  • Assist chief operations officer in 10 year bus purchase plan.
  • Develop and implement a parts-purchasing program for transportation mechanics.
  • Authorizes purchases in accordance with budgetary limitations and district rules.
  • Follows proper purchasing procedures, approves and forwards transportation service invoices to accounting for processing.
  • Prepares and submits information for payroll on a biweekly basis.
  • QUALIFICATIONS
  • Successful transportation director experience or building administration experience
  • Passion for ensuring that all students have access to high quality student services
  • Knowledgeable of State of Ohio school transportation rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of routing and logistics
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and make effective decisions
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to build relationships with external and internal stakeholders; ability to work with cross-functional teams and with District staff at all levels
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning skills, including the ability to translate strategic vision into actualized structures and processes and execute against goals
  • Understanding of and ability to execute organizational change management strategies
  • Ability to juggle management of several projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Analytic and problem solving skills and attention-to-detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including skills required to communicate diplomatically and persuasively to diverse stakeholders

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • As defined by the Board.
    Start date - June 1, 2026.
