Job Description POSITION: School Nurse
REPORTS TO: Building Principal or Designee
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time, 183 Days, Master Agreement, FLSA Exempt
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Ohio Certification/Licensure by The Ohio Department of Education as a registered School Nurse
- Valid Registered Nurse License issued by The Ohio Board of Nursing
- Certification to instruct CPR and AED courses to staff and students
- Must have experience with industrial safety
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong organizational and technology skills
- Must pass a criminal background check
- Hold a valid Ohio Driver's License
- Maintains compliance with Board policies and other applicable procedures/guidelines
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Responsible for any and all areas pertaining to administering health care. Gives leadership and guidance in the development of a total safe school program. Participates in the formulation and implementation of policies, and follows all standards and objectives of a school health and safety program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Serves as a consultant to the administrators, parents, students and teachers in regard to the health and safety needs of the students.
- Informs the administration and other school personnel with health and safety problems and resources in the school, home and community.
- Participates in the development of methods to carry out policies and procedures for the control of communicable disease within the school and implements these procedures with school personnel and parents.
- Participates in the implementation of board policies specific to medical items (diabetes care, use of epi-pens and inhalers, etc.)
- Oversees the management of the clinic.
- Keeps accurate and confidential student health records.
- Provides for vision and hearing screening of school students at specific grade levels and teacher referrals as needed.
- Provides basic first aid as needed for students and school staff.
- Administers medicines to students according to board policy and regulations.
- Completes and files an accident report on any injury requiring a doctor's care or when documentation is deemed to be necessary.
- Confers with pupils, parents and school personnel regarding health problems and interprets health needs of students.
- Makes suggestions to staff, recommendations for adapting programs for those special need students who remain in the regular classroom, as regards to physical limitations and restricted activity.
- Makes individualized and emergency health care plans (504) for students identified with medical conditions.
- Serves as a contact between home and school on health concerns or issues.
- Serves as resource person to all school personnel in matters of health and safety education.
- Instructs health and safety in the classroom.
- Confers with school personnel about maintenance of a safe clean and healthful school.
- Implements school-wide blood borne pathogen policy.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of technology utilized by the district.
- Maintains an acceptable attendance record and is punctual.
- Performs these and all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Designee
OTHER DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:
- Familiarizes her/himself with work done by community agencies, both in voluntary and official capacities. Is active in community and professional organizations relating to health and safety, which contributes to community health and welfare.
- Serves as a role model for staff and students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.

- Is punctual and thorough in the implementation of assigned duties
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee
KNOWLEDGE OF: Board policies and procedures, building policies and procedures, student code of conduct, community resource agencies, emergency preparedness drills, public relations, federal and state reporting, and records management.
ABILITY TO: Interpret policies, procedures and regulations, follow instructions, communicate effectively, maintain files and reports, collect data, recognize individual differences, lift a moderate amount of weight, prepare accurate and concise reports, develop a rapport with students, staff, co-workers, administration and the public.
ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:
OCCASIONAL: Exposure to severe weather, traffic, light lifting, travel to remote sites, attend functions and perform duties outside normal working hours. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
PERIODIC: Exposure to loud noise, irritating and hazardous chemicals, fumes, and unruly children and adults.
FREQUENT: Prolonged periods of standing and lifting of supplies and materials. Blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
