Summary Description:

To supervise, coordinate, and lead operations associated with vehicle repair and maintenance. This position is responsible for the oversight of shop personnel, workflow management, and ensuring all maintenance activities are completed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with division standards. The role combines hands-on technical expertise with leadership responsibility, requiring independent decision-making and accountability for shop performance.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required; minimum of five (5) years of experience in automotive and/or heavy vehicle maintenance and repair; verifiable vocational training may be considered for a portion of the experience requirement.
  • Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience in a fleet or automotive repair environment preferred.
  • Proficiency with computer operating systems and computerized diagnostic programs.
  • Valid commercial driver's license with necessary endorsements; satisfactory MVR; participation in school division controlled substances and alcohol testing program.
  • Current ASE Master Certification and Virginia State Certified Safety Inspector's License required.
  • Ability to lead, direct, and evaluate staff performance, enforce policies, and maintain accountability.
  • Exposure to chemicals, liquids, noise, and other hazards related to standard automotive repair operations.
  • Work is performed primarily in a vehicle repair facility; must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather when required.
  • Strong ability to function as a team leader, fostering collaboration, communication, and professionalism among staff.

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and help direct workflow in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations while coordinating staff and resources.
  • Extensive knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair procedures, along with the ability to oversee and verify the work of others.

Essential Duties:

Essential duties are interpreted as being descriptive and not restrictive in nature. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Assists in the direct supervision of shop personnel.
  • Plans, assigns, and evaluates work to ensure timely completion of repairs and maintenance.
  • Monitors employee performance, provides coaching and guidance, and recommends disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Develops and manages daily and long-term work schedules to optimize productivity and minimize downtime.
  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations, division policies, and industry standards.
  • Recommends hiring, training, and professional development opportunities for staff.
  • Maintain regular, punctual, dependable, and predictable attendance.
  • Supervise and coordinate daily operations of the maintenance shop, ensuring efficient workflow and high-quality work.
  • Delegate assignments and monitor progress of repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain positive customer, agency, and employee relations through effective communication and leadership.
  • Oversee and ensure completion of safety inspections for school buses, cars, trucks, and other equipment.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair vehicle systems as needed, while also reviewing and approving work performed by staff.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of tools, equipment, and shop facilities.
  • Enforce safety standards and ensure a clean, organized, and compliant work environment.
  • Be available for emergency contact on rotation with the Supervisor of Vehicle Operations.
  • Perform general shop maintenance and assist with repairs as needed to support staff.

Pay Rate:

The salary range is $62,950-$105,838

Full time / 12 months / 245 days
