Job Description

Elm City Montessori School, launched in August 2014, is New Haven’s first public Montessori school.  We are seeking a Montessori Coach to support us in building a vibrant and healthy learning environment in our new and growing school. We will serve 320 children preK-8th grade in the 2026-2027 academic year.  New Haven, Connecticut is a thriving arts, cultural, and education hub, located in the center of a growing community of public Montessori schools.

 

About the Position: As part of the instructional team, the Montessori Coach will be responsible for the implementation of a high fidelity, fully implemented Montessori program at the school. Our Montessori Coach must have AMS or AMI training in Primary or Elementary and years of experience as a guide in a Montessori classroom. This person reports to the Principal and coordinates with Guides and support staff. The key components of the position include: Coaching guides and assistants in Montessori pedagogy and curriculum, coordinating with leadership on professional learning and implementation of school wide priorities, and creating and supporting materials for Culturally Responsive Montessori curriculum. 

Required Qualifications:  Applicant must have a BA, a Master’s in Education, Special Education or a related field, and Montessori Primary or Elementary training and a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a primary or elementary Montessori classroom/school.

Preferred Qualifications:  The ideal applicant is well-organized, positive, proactive, and motivated.  S/he is deeply invested in the Montessori Method of education, has experience in Montessori environments, has strong communication skills, has coached and managed teams, and possesses a strong desire to involve families in their children’s education.  

 

Key Components of the Position:

  • Coaching guides and assistants in Montessori pedagogy and curriculum

  • Coordinating with leadership on professional learning and implementation of school wide priorities

  • Creating and supporting materials for Culturally Responsive Montessori curriculum

 

Areas of Responsibility

Curriculum 

  • Plans and facilitates professional learning to support Montessori implementation in all areas of the curriculum and in alignment with school priorities

  • Revises curriculum maps, lessons, and materials with guides and leadership, with awareness of state and national standards to plan curriculum that fits the Montessori model

  • Uses data from a variety of sources to evaluate effectiveness of curriculum and provide feedback to leadership and guides

 

Environment 

  • Observes and supports implementation of beauty and order of the Montessori environment at the classroom level and schoolwide

  • Provides feedback and active intervention and support to classroom and school wide spaces 

  • Supports individual classes with organizing and layout of materials as needed

  • Coordinates with  level teams in sourcing materials to support curriculum and program

  • Manages  Montessori materials storage, organization, and distribution

 

Coaching & Program Communication

  • Systematically gathers information, observation, and data from Transparent classroom and Jupiter Grades to provide accountability and support to guides and assistants

  • Coaches individual teachers/guide and assistants on method, planning, and lesson sequences and in support of a focused learning environment that meets individual student needs

  • Observes classroom environments for Montessori implementation in academics, grace and courtesy, and classroom community and provides feedback

  • Plans and facilitates monthly professional learning for assistants at every level based on coordination with guides and leadership

  • Uses information gathered from coaching to inform schoolwide priorities and planning

 

Children and Families

  • Supports student transitions, recess, lunch, and other student community work to ensure alignment to  grace and courtesy, appropriate use of materials and spaces

  • Organizes and supports programmatic experiences in and outside of school, trips, outdoor activities

  • Partners with parents in understanding and supporting understanding of the Montessori Method and their child’s developmental progress

  • Organizes and participates in Montessori curriculum education events for families

 

 Leadership

  • Facilitates teams meetings, including, but not limited to, focused work with level teams, guides, assistants

  • Participate in School Planning Team, Level Facilitator Team, and Math and Reading Teams

 

Compensation: 

This is a position hired by New Haven Public Schools that qualifies for membership in the New Haven Federation of Teachers union, and with our accompanying flexibility agreement the salary range is $58,000-$118,000 based on years of teaching experience and education.
