Position: Temporary Summer Maintenance Staffer

Facilities Department/Plant Operations and Maintenance

General Statement of Duties:

The CPS Facilities Management department is seeking to hire several temporary employees for the school summer break, from June 2026 through August 2026.

During this time, selected candidates will work on a variety of projects, such as painting, moving, cleaning, etc. To accomplish these tasks, successful candidates must be able to safely use hand and power tools, custodial cleaning equipment, vehicles, lifts, scaffolds, ladders, and other equipment.

They may also be assigned to help electricians, plumbers, HVAC, and custodial personnel to complete project requests and work orders.

Examples of duties include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Sweeping, dusting, mopping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing; making minor repairs and adjustments
  • Cleaning and care of floors (wood, concrete, vinyl tile), walls (plaster, wood, cinder block), windows, light fixtures, toilets, wash bowls, and building furnishings and equipment
  • Using hand tools and large cleaning equipment such as vacuums, carpet extractors, burnishes, and floor washing machines.
  • Replacing light bulbs and ceiling tiles using ladders, lifts, and scaffolds
  • Care and maintenance of school grounds, including litter pickup and removal, sweeping of walks, raking, mowing, and watering grass where designated, requiring the use of hand and power lawn mowers

Each successful candidate must pass the CORI background check before they are offered a position. Work hours will be 8 hours per day between 6 am and 4 pm, Monday through Friday. Specific hours and schedules will be communicated to employees in advance. It is anticipated that the employment will start in June/July and end in late August of 2025.

Terms of Employment:

The position of a temporary summer employee is not eligible for benefits, paid holidays, or any time off. Employees are paid only for time worked. Temporary employees are expected to behave and dress appropriately. Employment may be terminated at any time due to lack of work assignments, employee performance or management decision.
