Job DescriptionHolyoke High School Dean Campus seeks a Career Technical Education teacher for our Diesel Technology program. The instructor will teach students the knowledge, technical skills, professional expectations, safety practices, and career readiness skills needed for success in the diesel technology field. The program prepares students to inspect, diagnose, service, and repair diesel engines, electrical and electronic systems, brakes, suspension and steering systems, fuel systems, air brakes, hydraulic brakes, HVAC systems, drivetrain components, and related vehicle systems.
The Diesel Technology instructor will provide classroom, laboratory, shop, and applied learning experiences aligned to the Massachusetts Career Technical Education Frameworks, industry-recognized credentials, and program expectations. Students will learn and practice the principles of safe and effective diesel maintenance and repair, including tool and equipment use, diagnostic procedures, technical documentation, customer service, employability skills, and preparation for industry credentials such as OSHA 10 General Industry and ASE Entry-Level certifications.
The teacher will:
- Plan and deliver a competency-based program of study aligned to the Massachusetts Diesel Technology CTE Frameworks, district curriculum expectations, and student needs.
? Teach occupational knowledge and skills related to diesel engines, electrical and electronic systems, batteries, starting and charging systems, fuel systems, brakes, suspension and steering, drivetrain systems, HVAC, diagnostic equipment, and inspection, maintenance, and minor repair.
? Create and maintain a safe, respectful, inclusive, and productive classroom, laboratory, and shop environment.
? Instruct students in health and safety practices for a diesel shop environment, including OSHA expectations, personal protective equipment, safe tool and equipment use, lift and jack safety, hazardous materials handling, battery safety, Lock-out/Tag-out procedures, fire safety, and environmental compliance.
? Develop lesson plans, demonstrations, simulations, shop projects, performance tasks, and applied learning activities that prepare students for success in the diesel technology field.
? Guide students in the proper use of hand tools, power tools, precision measuring tools, diagnostic equipment, service information, technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and digital diagnostic software.
? Prepare students for applicable industry-recognized credentials, including OSHA 10 General Industry and ASE Entry-Level certifications in areas such as Diesel Engines, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, and Inspection, Maintenance, and Minor Repair.
? Assess student performance, technical skill development, safety competency, employability skills, professionalism, and career readiness on a regular basis.
? Use student performance data to adjust instruction, provide support, and communicate progress to students, families, counselors, administrators, and program partners.
? Maintain accurate, complete, and timely records as required by law, district policy, program expectations, and administrative regulations, including attendance, grades, competency tracking, safety documentation, and student progress reports.
? Prepare and organize lesson materials, equipment, tools, training areas, supplies, and shop resources to support effective instruction and student safety.
? Collaborate with school leaders, CTE staff, advisory board members, employers, industry partners, postsecondary partners, and community organizations to strengthen program quality and student opportunities.
? Support cooperative education, internships, job shadows, field experiences, advisory board activities, and other career-connected learning opportunities when appropriate and approved.
? Attend staff meetings, participate in required professional learning, and continue developing professional competence in both teaching and the Diesel Technology field.
? Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications- High school diploma, equivalent, or higher degree required.
? Five years of full-time employment experience directly related to Diesel Technology required.
? Current Automotive Service Excellence, ASE, certification in at least one area of Diesel Technology required.
? ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certification preferred.
? Must hold, be eligible for, or be prepared to obtain a Massachusetts Career Technical Teacher License or waiver in Diesel Technology, 9-14.
? Ability to meet Massachusetts preliminary Career Technical Teacher licensure requirements, including applicable written and performance testing and literacy testing requirements.
? Knowledge of diesel engines, fuel systems, electrical and electronic systems, batteries, starting and charging systems, brakes, suspension and steering, drivetrain systems, HVAC, inspection procedures, diagnostic tools, and preventive maintenance.
? Knowledge of shop safety expectations, OSHA-related safety practices, personal protective equipment, hazardous materials handling, equipment maintenance, lift safety, battery safety, fire safety, and environmental compliance.
? Ability to develop and deliver competency-based, applied learning experiences aligned to state frameworks, industry expectations, and student needs.
? Commitment to ensuring academic, technical, and career success for all students.
? Ability to read, interpret, and apply student performance data to instructional planning and execution.
? Strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent teamwork skills, and strong organizational skills.
? Experience working in an urban setting preferred.
? Experience working with diverse student populations preferred.
? Skills in managing challenging student behaviors strongly preferred.
? Prior teaching, training, mentoring, apprenticeship supervision, or industry-based instructional experience preferred.
