E X P E C T E D V A C A N C YThe following is a full-time, 12-month position: Assistant Director of Buildings and GroundsPosition SummaryThe Assistant Director of Buildings and Grounds supports the safe, clean, efficient, and well-maintained operation of all district buildings, grounds, and related systems in a K-12 school environment. Reporting directly to the Director of Buildings and Grounds, this position assists in overseeing daily maintenance and grounds operations, implementing preventive maintenance programs, coordinating contractors and inspections, maintaining equipment and inventory, and helping manage capital improvements and larger construction projects.
The successful candidate will be highly organized, technology-proficient, and experienced in facilities, mechanical systems, construction, or a related field. This individual must be able to lead teams effectively, prioritize multiple projects, and contribute to a school environment that supports students, staff, and the community.
Qualifications: - Associate degree, technical training, trade certification, or equivalent job experience in mechanical systems, construction, facilities maintenance, building operations, or a related field required.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in facilities maintenance, construction, or building operations preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience overseeing maintenance and grounds personnel preferred.
- Working knowledge of building systems, maintenance procedures, grounds care, equipment operation, and general construction practices.
- Experience coordinating contractors, vendors, and inspections.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, maintenance manuals, and related documents.
- Strong organizational, communication, and follow-through skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency with technology, including email, spreadsheets, digital work order systems, and related software.
- Strong knowledge of the Pennsylvania Public School Code, applicable federal and state acts, laws, and regulations pertaining to K-12 schools, including school operations, facilities, inspections, clearances, environmental compliance, and accessibility requirements.
- Valid driver's license required.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
- Pesticide application license/certification preferred.
- Pool operator's license/certification preferred.
- Experience in a K-12 school district, higher education, municipal, or similar institutional setting preferred.
- Knowledge of school safety practices, regulatory inspections, and facility compliance requirements
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with administrators, staff, contractors, and community partners.
- Knowledge of safe work practices, and risk management procedures.
- Ability to maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and document work completion.
- Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and urgent facility issues.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Director of Buildings and Grounds in the day-to-day operation of all district facilities and grounds.
- Supervise and support maintenance and grounds crews to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to district standards.
- Help develop, implement, and monitor a comprehensive preventive maintenance (PM) program for district buildings, equipment, and grounds.
- Coordinate and follow up with outside contractors, vendors, and service providers; monitor quality of work, timelines, and contract compliance.
- Assist with the development, administration, and oversight of service contracts related to facilities and grounds operations.
- Schedule and track all required inspections, testing, certifications, and regulatory compliance activities for buildings, grounds, and equipment.
- Maintain equipment inventory and oversees repair and maintenance records for tools, vehicles, machinery, and facility systems.
- Assist with identifying facility repair priorities and long-term capital improvement needs.
- Support the planning and oversight of major maintenance projects, renovations, and large construction projects.
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, training, supervision, performance evaluations, and discipline of maintenance and grounds personnel in accordance with district policy.
- Help establish work schedules, assign tasks, and respond to urgent maintenance or safety issues as needed.
- Use work order systems, spreadsheets, scheduling tools, and other technology platforms to track operations, maintenance history, supplies, and project progress.
- Monitor facility conditions to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.
- Support district emergency preparedness and response efforts related to facilities, weather events, power outages, and building emergencies.
- Ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations, safety practices, and district procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Buildings and Grounds.
