Position Title: Food Service Kitchen Manager (Elementary)

Location: Little Highlanders Learning Center

Reports To: Food Service Director and/or Early Childhood Director, Early Childhood Coordinator

Status: Ten (10) month position; First day of school for students - Last day of school for students

Hours: 6.50 hrs/day; 7:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.; 32.25 hrs/week;

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Summary:

The Kitchen Manager Elementary provides support in our student nutrition program by assisting the Food Service Supervisor in the overall management and organization of the food service program all while providing excellent customer service to staff, students and families.

Essential Functions:
  • Turn on and off equipment as needed.
  • Take temperatures of equipment twice a day and record on temperature logs.
  • Clean and sanitize work area.
  • Responsible for printing Meal To The Classroom rosters for all classrooms.
  • Prepare breakfast items per breakfast menu and record beginning numbers on the Breakfast Food Production Record (FPR). Record temperatures of food on FPR.
  • Place all breakfast items on carts.
  • Fit in a 15 minute breakfast break.
  • Go to the storeroom and gather bins used for afternoon snacks for all the classrooms. Bring back to the kitchen the bins and dishes to be washed. Count leftover breakfast and record on the FPR. Complete afternoon snack FPR.
  • Prepare lunch items per lunch menu and record beginning numbers on the Lunch Food Production Record (FPR). Record temperatures of food on FPR.
  • Recording beginning numbers and leftover numbers on the Lunch FPR.
  • Portion food properly per classroom and be conscientious of food and supply costs.
  • When carts return after breakfast, empty carts. Bring back to the kitchen dishes that need to be washed and any breakfast items; count leftover breakfast and record on the FPR. Complete breakfast FPR.
  • Clean and sanitize carts before placing lunch items on carts.
  • Prepare/count afternoon snacks for all classrooms and place in refrigerators. Pull items that might need to thaw for the next day and tray or count out any breakfast items for need for the next day.
  • When carts return after lunch, empty carts. Bring back to the kitchen dishes that need to be washed and any breakfast items; count leftover lunch items and record on the FPR. Complete lunch FPR.
  • Clean and sanitize carts
  • Be sure to always portion food properly per classroom and conscientious of food and supply costs.
  • Responsible for collecting all Meal To The Classroom rosters daily and for entering them into our point-of-sale system (POS) in a timely manner.
  • Help wash and sanitize dishes.
  • Place food orders weekly with the Food Service Coordinator. Receive and check in deliveries, sign invoices and send them to the Food Service office, and help put items away following FIFO.
  • Responsible for checking production records on a daily basis to make sure they are completed and filled out correctly and for filing production records by date.
  • Answer and handle incoming calls. Read and respond to emails. Handle questions.
  • Receive and log temperatures of incoming food and help put food/supplies away.
  • Make sure floors are swept daily and mopped at the end of the week. Assist with taking out trash when needed.
  • Fit in a 15 minute lunch break.
  • Report any repairs needed to the Food Service Supervisor.
  • Report any injuries to the Food Service Supervisor and fill out any papers required for injuries.
  • Run promotions and help promote school breakfast and lunch.
  • Assist with training Food Service employees and substitutes.
  • Keep the Food Service Supervisor informed of personnel problems.
  • Check employee's timesheets for accuracy. Approves employee's timesheet when ready.
  • Maintain sanitation standards for workers and the kitchen.
  • Responsible for keeping inventory levels adequate and as low as possible.
  • Help keep refrigerators, freezer, microwave oven and convection oven clean and sanitized.
  • Responsible for the general supervision of the kitchen. Carry out policies and procedures.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding student accounts when cashiering.
  • Attend monthly manager meetings.
  • Regular, predictable in-person attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Note: Food Service Employees running a register must maintain confidentiality regarding student accounts and need to keep all computer register components clean and free of dust. This includes: computer register/monitor, keyboard, mouse, cord and computer stand.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma (or equivalent); and must pass a basic math skills test.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written English language;
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions;
  • Ability to work with the general public and students.

COMPUTER SKILLS:
  • Basic computer skills.

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of District requirements and Board policies / administrative guidelines;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively, speaking clearly and communicating thoughts succinctly;
  • Ability to react well under pressure, handle and balance multiple demands at one time, work with frequent interruptions and perform duties and tasks at expected levels of professionalism with minimal supervision;
  • Accurate and detail oriented; and
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers, administration and the school community.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to coordinate hands, eyes, feet and limbs in performing semi-skilled movements such as cooking, washing dishes and operation of a computer keyboard, cash register, and telephone. The employee is required to be on his/her feet walking around the cafeteria and food service department building for several hours at a time. The employee is required to exert physical effort in work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, walking, standing, reaching with hands and arms, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds from floor to waist height. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The work environment is normally indoors with controlled climate conditions. Occasionally the employee may be required to be outdoors for a short period of time, and therefore subject to varying weather conditions, for purposes of accomplishing the essential functions of this job. This position requires the employee to work in different building cafeteria and food service departments as needed. The ability to travel via employee's automobile between buildings is required.
