Special Education Pre-K Educational Technician II or III - Float
Pay Range: $22.73 to $33.65 (including differential) per hour per Educational Technicians Association CBA, Appendix A 2026-27.
Reports To Pre-K IEP Coordinator, Special Education Teacher, and Building Administrator
Position Summary
The Pre-K Special Education Educational Technician (Float) serves as a flexible member of the Special Services team, providing instructional, and behavioral support across preschool classrooms and programs. This position assists in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), supports students with diverse learning and behavioral needs, and helps maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment. The Float Educational Technician plays a critical role in ensuring continuity of services by providing classroom coverage, supporting student de-escalation, covering staff lunch breaks and absences, and responding to changing program needs throughout the school day.
This position may require assignments across multiple preschool classrooms, programs, and school buildings within RSU 21. The successful candidate must be comfortable adapting to changing schedules, student needs, and classroom environments while maintaining a positive and collaborative approach.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Student Support
Assist in the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) under the supervision of the IEP Coordinator, building principal, and the Director of Special Services.
Provide instructional support to individual students and small groups in academic, communication, social-emotional, behavioral, and adaptive skill development.
Support student participation in classroom routines, structured learning activities, community-based activities, and inclusive educational opportunities.
Facilitate positive peer interactions and engagement in classroom activities.
Assist students with personal care needs, including toileting, dressing, feeding, and hygiene, as necessary.
Support students during transitions, arrival, dismissal, recess, lunch, and other school activities.
Behavioral and Social-Emotional Support
Implement behavior support plans and positive behavioral interventions as directed by certified staff.
Assist in the implementation of proactive behavior supports, co-regulation strategies, and sensory supports.
Support students experiencing dysregulation through district-approved de-escalation techniques and interventions.
Respond to behavioral incidents and student crises while maintaining student dignity, safety, and emotional well-being.
Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and administrators to support students with significant behavioral and social-emotional needs.
Float and Coverage Responsibilities
Provide temporary coverage for Educational Technicians during lunch breaks, meetings, trainings, planning periods, and other approved absences.
Serve as a flexible support person across preschool classrooms and programs based on daily student and staffing needs.
Assist classrooms experiencing increased behavioral and instructional demands.
Support the maintenance of appropriate student-to-staff ratios throughout the school day.
Adjust assignments and priorities as directed by administration and special services staff.
Collaboration and Documentation
Collect and maintain student data as directed by special education staff.
Assist with the preparation of instructional materials and classroom organization.
Collaborate effectively with teachers, therapists, administrators, and related service providers.
Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and educational records in accordance with district, state, and federal regulations.
Attend required trainings, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities.
Additional Duties
Perform other duties as assigned by the Pre-K IEP Coordinator, Special Education Teacher, or Building Administrator in support of student programming and Special Services operations.
Qualifications
Valid Maine Educational Technician Authorization (Ed Tech I, II, or III).
Experience working with preschool-aged children preferred.
Experience supporting students with disabilities, behavioral challenges, and/or social-emotional needs preferred.
Knowledge of child development and early childhood educational practices.
Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to remain calm, flexible, and responsive in dynamic situations.
Safety-Care certification or willingness to obtain certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
Ability to actively supervise and engage with young children throughout the school day.
Ability to lift, position, and assist students as needed.
Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting, and floor-level interaction.
Ability to safely respond to student behaviors, including elopement, aggression, and behavioral crises.
Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
Terms of Employment
School-year position following the RSU 21 academic calendar.
Salary and benefits in accordance with the negotiated Educational Technician contract.
Additional opportunities for Extended School Year (ESY) employment may be available.
