Position Overview

This is a dedicated 1:1 position providing essential medical, educational, and personal care support to a specific student with complex medical fragilities and profound communication and educational needs. The nurse serves in a dual capacity as both a 1:1 nurse and a special education paraprofessional, ensuring the student's safety, dignity, and active participation in the learning environment through constant monitoring and the delivery of life-sustaining care.

  • Current South Carolina Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in good standing
  • Valid CPR/First Aid certification
  • Experience in pediatric complex care or high-needs environments preferred
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting, transfers, and positioning of students (40+ lbs)
  • Strong observational skills and ability to maintain positive interpersonal communication
CONTRACT:185-190 Days SALARY:Teacher Pay scale, based on experience (RN); Classified Pay scale, Grade 20, based on experience (LPN)

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Clinical Nursing & Airway Safety: Maintains constant vigilance for airway safety and monitors for signs of silent aspiration; performs oral suctioning and manages secretions.
  • Nutritional & Medical Management: Administers enteral (tube) feedings and scheduled water flushes via G-tube; provides specialized feeding support and monitors for choking risks during oral intake.
  • Communication & Educational Support: Acts as a paraprofessional assistant by facilitating the student's use of an AAC device to ensure functional communication and participation in classroom activities.
  • Physical Support & Orthopedic Care: Performs regular skin and safety checks on AFOs every few hours; assists with position changes, transfers (40+ lbs), and the use of PT equipment to maintain student comfort and health.
  • Personal Care & Hygiene: Provides full, dedicated assistance with diapering, incontinence care, and all personal hygiene needs with a high degree of sensitivity and professionalism.
  • Documentation & Collaboration: Maintains detailed clinical and ADL logs, including intake/output and medical observations; collaborates closely with the classroom teacher and school RN to support the student's overall well-being.
