General Definition of Work

The Educational Interpreter I, under moderate supervision, performs support work with minimal decision-making discretion interpreting/transliterating in the classroom or at school-related activities for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Position supports students in following daily directions that are provided by the teacher and collaborates with the teacher to address concerns. Employee performs school-based work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the EC Instructional Program Manager and the School Principal.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions
  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Facilitate communication between the student and their peers, and the student and adults in the school environment
  • Study the content of lessons prior to class to ensure accurate representation of the lesson
  • Tutor students who are deaf or hard of hearing under the direction of the teacher
  • Provide feedback to teachers upon request
  • Serve as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships within the school environment
  • Teach beginning sign language to students or staff, as needed/required
  • Participate in professional development workshops and continuing education opportunities
  • Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of county and school board policies, procedures, and standards
  • Knowledge of typical language development
  • Skilled in the communication modality used by students who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Skilled in English grammar, including syntax, spelling, and punctuation
  • Skill in expressive transliterating/interpreting at a rate commensurate with conversational speech and class lectures; adequate reverse interpreting/transliterating skill while maintaining the integrity of the message
  • Skilled in communication, both verbal and written
  • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships; work collaboratively within and across departments, external agencies, and the public
  • Ability to respond appropriately to situations while maintaining a professional and personable demeanor
  • Ability to use or learn specialized tools, equipment, or software
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Education and Experience
  • Associate degree in educational interpreting or related field required
  • Minimum score of 3.3 on the Educational Interpreter Proficiency Assessment (EIPA) required
  • Prior related experience preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Special Requirements
  • Must complete 20 hours annually of training related to interpreting that has been approved by the local education agency
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
